PRESS RELEASE: VERMONT TOWN VOTES IN FAVOR OF 52-MEGAWATT WIND FARM
Sheffield Residents Turn Out To Support UPC Vermont Wind Project
12/08/2005
BOSTON, December 8 -- Voters in the town of Sheffield Vermont gathered last week to vote on a non-binding resolution to support a 52-megawatt wind farm in their Northeast Kingdom community. Voter turnout was greater than the last presidential election and a majority (120-93) favored the project. UPC Vermont Wind’s proposed project would generate approximately 145,000,000 kiloWatt-hours per year and provide power to 15,000-20,000 homes. “This is an early step in a lengthy process,” said UPC president Paul Gaynor. “We are enthused by the fact that the majority of the people of Sheffield have taken the time to do their homework and clearly support this important project. The Public Service Board is the ultimate arbiter, but the vote of confidence from the public is an important consideration for the regulators.” UPC will present its application to Vermont’s Public Service Board early in 2006. Construction could begin as early as 2007. About First Wind First Wind is based in Newton, Massachusetts.
